There Is Little Mystery About the Cause of Old Age and Death

Every man and woman has two barriers against disease and illness—the first, that afforded by the State and City in clean streets, pure food, pure water, quarantine and the like, and the second, 'individual resistance to disease.' There is little mystery about the cause of old age and death. Heredity plays its part, of course. Certain families show a lack of resistance to disease and incapacity for life's struggle, but it is known that there is a susceptibility to a certain disease, measures can be taken to avoid it. Aside from hereditary influences, infection is probably the greatest factor in destroying the body. When we speak of infection, the average person thinks of typhoid fever, scarlet fever, diphtheria and other epidemic diseases. But there are other kinds of infections, known as 'local infections,' which are becoming recognized as mighty factors in destroying life. Many serious diseases come from infection in the mouth and tonsils and in the nose and throat. So-called rheumatism, neuritis, sciatica, neuralgia, lumbago and practically all ailments of this nature have been found to be secondary, in a large percentage of cases, to focal infection. Chronic changes in the heart, kidneys and blood vessels may be due to focal infections, and high blood pressure and low blood pressure may be due to this cause. Needless to say, any focus of infection is a serious menace to health and should be discovered as promptly as possible and removed. That is another good reason why everyone should have a periodic health examination, as it is only by such an examination that the whole body can be thoroughly investigated and such conditions revealed and corrected.
