If I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, it’s because we’ve always done this outside the traditional channels of Washington and the big-money outside groups just spent more than we do, and this is the hard-to-understand part: more than we can. And that’s because of the way we’ve built this campaign. Instead of having a few people write big checks, we’ve got millions of people chipping in what they can afford. And again, that’s not including the tens of millions of dollars that Romney’s campaign is giving to outside groups. But the point is that we can’t expect to win if we’re outspent 10 to 1.
